What Is 7-Zip and Why Use It?
7-Zip is a free, open-source file archiver for Windows. It can compress files into several formats (.7z, .zip, .tar, .gzip) and extract from over 40 different archive types including RAR, ISO, CAB, and many more. Unlike WinRAR (which nags you to buy a license) or WinZip (paid), 7-Zip is completely free — and often achieves better compression ratios too.
Step 1: Download 7-Zip
- Open your browser and go to the official website: 7-zip.org
- Choose the correct installer for your system:
- 64-bit Windows: Download the
x64.exe installer - 32-bit Windows: Download the
x86.exe installer - If unsure: press Win + Pause/Break or check Settings → System → About to see your system type

.exefile - Windows may ask for permission — click Yes on the UAC prompt

Step 3: Extracting Files with 7-Zip
This is the most common use case — opening a .zip, .7z, or .rar file someone sent you.
- Find your archive file in Windows Explorer (e.g.,
photos.zip) - Right-click on it
- Hover over 7-Zip in the context menu
- Choose one of:
- Extract Here — extracts files into the current folder
- Extract to "photos\" — creates a new subfolder with the archive's name and extracts into it (recommended to keep things tidy)
- Open archive — opens the archive contents so you can browse and selectively extract files
Step 4: Compressing Files with 7-Zip
- Select one or more files/folders in Windows Explorer
- Right-click and hover over 7-Zip
- Click Add to archive…
- In the dialog that opens:
- Archive name: Change the output filename if you like
- Archive format: Choose
7zfor best compression orzipfor maximum compatibility - Compression level: "Normal" is fine for most uses; "Ultra" takes longer but compresses more
- Encryption: Optionally add a password under the Encryption section
- Click OK to create the archive
Step 5: Using 7-Zip File Manager
7-Zip also installs a standalone File Manager (search "7-Zip File Manager" in the Start Menu). This gives you a two-panel file browser interface similar to old-school tools like Total Commander. You can navigate folders, open archives, and batch-extract files all in one window.
Tips and Tricks
- Split archives: In the "Add to archive" dialog, set a Split to volumes size to create multi-part archives (useful for large files you need to send in parts).
- Test archives: Right-click an archive → 7-Zip → Test archive to verify integrity without extracting.
- Command line: 7-Zip includes a CLI tool (
7z.exe) for scripting and automation.
Summary
7-Zip is one of the most essential free tools for any Windows PC. It's lightweight, powerful, and costs nothing. Download it once from the official site and you'll never need to pay for WinRAR or WinZip again.
